About: The Oxford American is published quarterly out of the University of Central Arkansas. It features writing and art from and/or about the American South. It was established as a general interest magazine such as The New Yorker geared specifically toward the South. Publication has been stopped several times due to lack of financing, but has been published in its current form since 2004.
Analysis: Calvin is a great cultural gulf away from the South, but if there are any Southerners out there looking for a place to submit regional literature, The Oxford American might be the place. I picked up the “Best of the South 2009” issue almost on a whim, and couldn’t put it down. There’s a travel piece that centers around the fountain of youth myth, Billy Collins is a contributor, and there’s a half-page ad for Neko Case’s new CD.
