About: The Malahat Review is published quarterly by the University of Victoria (BC, Canada), and is considered one of Canada’s leading literary journals.
It “is dedicated to excellence in writing. Its aim is to discover the most promising of the new writers and publish their work alongside the best established writers, to present work accurately and attractively to readers, and to increase awareness of Canadian writing in general through perceptive critical comment.”
The Malahat Review purchases first world serial rights. Copyright reverts to the author upon publication.
Analysis: The Malahat Review seems to hold to a pretty high standard of writing—the journal itself has earned many acclamations of excellence, and a good number of its authors have won impressive national writing awards.
The Malahat Review also features some writing contests in various categories (with cash prizes!) that would be worth checking out… See the website for more information on each of these.
The journal is unfortunately no available through Hekman or for free online, but if you’re interested, it can be subscribed to for a price either in print form or online.
