About: Ninth Letter is operated by faculty and students at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and is jointly sponsored by the Department of English and the School of Art and Design—it is an “interdisciplinary collaborative project.” It “lives a dual life as both a print publication and a web site.” The editors write, “We reject the notion that literature is an isolated mode of expression, or that it is encountered only as words on a page. Instead, we recognize and seek the intersections of literature and visual culture, traditional forms and new technology.”
Analysis: I’m predisposed to like publications that utilize the potential of new media, so I find Ninth Letter’s inclusion of podcast and blog features really cool. The people at Ninth Letter are excited about new things, about experimentation. Due to its nature as a collaborative project with the School of Art and Design, Ninth Letteris a very visually exciting publication. No sample submissions are available to read, so I couldn’t get much of a taste for what kind of writing gets published, but I would tend to assume that experimental, different writing does well.
