About: Crab Orchard Review is published out of Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. According to Writer’s Market, they would like more novel excerpts that can stand alone as pieces of fiction.
Crab Orchard Review also holds annual literary contests each spring.
Analysis: I like the Crab Orchard Review because it seems personal. All work is read by one of the three main editors, and they do not use standard rejection slips. They welcome simultaneous submissions, and specify that work previous published on a personal website or blog, or publication directly tied to a student writer’s educational pursuits (e.g. “work published in an undergraduate literary magazine for distribution in a college or university community or work collected in an unpublished thesis or creative dissertation that may be archived online for professional development”) are still considered for publication in Crab Orchard Review.
