Good people of Post Calvin,
It’s mid-April. For many of you, mid-April simply means that Easter is over, tax day has come and gone, and—for those in northern climes—the sun has finally decided to show its face more than once a week. For yours truly, however, mid-April means “I-only-have-three-days-of-classes-left-and-HOW-many-papers-are-due-on-Friday?”
In other words, mid-April means panic.
So, in a shameless act of misdirection, I offer you a few happy things that have sprouted on the Internet lately.
And, yes, some of them come from Buzzfeed. Don’t judge.
Instead of padlocking her dumpster when she discovered that someone had been rooting through her trash, an Oklahoma City sandwich shop owner opted for dignity. “To the person going through our trash for their next meal,” the note on her door now reads, “You’re a human being and worth more than a meal from a dumpster. Please come in during operating hours for a classic PB&J, fresh veggies, and a cup of water at no charge. No questions asked.” http://www.buzzfeed.com/ryanhatesthis/a-very-special-peanut-butter-and-jelly-sandwich#.mh1wM70b4
Because Dutch people are fundamentally awesome, a nursing home in the Netherlands decided that cash-strapped students and lonely elderly residents had a lot to offer each other. At the Humanitas retirement home in Deventer, Netherlands, university students can live rent-free in little apartments, as long as they’re quiet, respectful, and spend at least thirty hours each month hanging out with the residents. Together, they celebrate birthdays, watch TV, do crafts, and shoot the breeze. http://www.pbs.org/newshour/rundown/dutch-retirement-home-offers-rent-free-housing-students-one-condition/
Somehow, this couple managed to stay silent not only about their baby’s gender, but also the fact that their baby was a twin. In the hospital, at home, and via Skype, they pulled off the surprise-reveal again and again. Shock, awe, and adorableness. http://www.buzzfeed.com/alivelez/this-couple-revealed-the-best-kept-secret-with-the-birth-of#.ayjolGm5N
Finally, puppies. Because puppies. http://goodstuffhappenedtoday.tumblr.com/post/116384237547/ahab99-drunkenssoldier-evil-isnt-born

Geneva Langeland (’13) survived graduate school with minimal blood loss, escaping with her ms in environmental policy and communication. She now works in Ann Arbor, Michigan, as the communications editor at Michigan Sea Grant. There, she gets to hang out with educators, researchers, and communicators who love the Great Lakes as much as she does.

Thanks for this refreshing post. It brought light and warmth to the still-thawing reaches of the Midwest.
